Wearing Your Retainer After Braces
Wearing retainers after straightening your teeth is essential in order to prevent the recurrence of crooked teeth in most cases. It is necessary to wear orthodontic retainers after braces to maintain your perfect smile. The periodontal ligament and bone need time to permanently re-establish around the new position of your teeth. When getting retainers after braces, it is critical to use the retainer exactly as instructed by your orthodontist. The use of your retainer may be adjusted over time.
Again, it is important for patients to follow their orthodontist’s instructions when getting retainers after treatment. Each case is different, as some patients may be asked to wear their retainer only a few nights per week. Other patients may be advised to wear their retainer every night for up to 3 months. A patient can switch to wearing their retainer several nights per week with the recommendation of their orthodontist.
